Another tournament championship was captured over the weekend by the No. 5 Washington Demon wrestling team (17-0). The Demon wrestlers competed in the 51st annual Gary Curtis Invitational Saturday at Highland High School featuring grapplers from Cascade, Columbus, Highland, Muscatine, New London, Regina, South Tama, Tri-County, West Branch, West Liberty and Wilton. Washington claimed third place or better in nine weight classes, winning the team title with 203.5 points. West Liberty took second place with 163.5 points.
Washington was represented in championship matches by six wrestlers. Tristin Westphal-Edwards (160) and Tanner Murphy (220) finished first overall in their weight divisions. Wesphal-Edwards made it to the championship match after tallying first period pins in the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds. He won the title with a 6-1 decision victory over Regina’s Ryan Schott. After receiving a bye in the first round, Murphy pinned his way to first place. In the championship match, Murphy brought Muscatine’s Dalton Sell to his back 39 seconds into the second period.
Garrett Ikerd (113), Kyle Anderson (126), Karlton Skubal (195), and Mitchell Huisenga (285) were all defeated in the championship round. Brandon Dickel (120), Andrew Waite (138) and Trey Van Weelden (152) each won their consolation bracket, taking third place.
The Washington wrestling team concludes their Southeast Conference season Thursday, hosting the Mount Pleasant Panthers.
