Congressman Dave Loebsack (D-Iowa) visited Kalona Tuesday to get a sneak peak at the Kalona Creamery Shop and Deli before they open their doors. Loebsack’s visit included conversations with the owners and employees, a tour of the facilities, and he even got to take a sandwich home. Visiting small businesses is something he often does, as he tries to visit the 24 counties he represents as often as he can. He was complimentary of the Kalona Creamery’s new facilities, saying, “I have to tell you, that’s quite an operation. I was there when the previous owners owned it, and of course I’d been over to the original location a little ways away. So when I found out that these folks had bought this operation, I thought I should get there and see what they’re up to. It looks pretty exciting, and they’re moving right along. One of the best parts about it, I think, is that they’re going to be hiring even more folks. And that’s always a good thing in that area.”

The Kalona Creamery Shop and Deli officially opens its doors Thursday, after several construction delays. A grand opening celebration will be held February 4th. It’s located north of Kalona on Highway 1, and will feature cheese curds, specialty meats and cheeses, pastries, soups, salads, and sandwiches. Loebsack was particularly impressed that the majority of their products were supplied locally, and they are supporting other local small businesses by selling their retail.
