Legislation that would permit parents to grant temporary guardianship to another adult is being discussed in Des Moines. State Senator Kevin Kinney (D) explains he was part of the subcommittee that helped move the bill along. He said when working with the sheriff’s office, he’s been called to the hospital to assist with cases where a friend is trying to seek medical care for a child while the parents are on vacation and it is difficult to track down the parents for verbal consent while they’re gone. Also, he said if parents were to be incarcerated, they could also potentially use this to grant temporary custody to someone else. Kinney said this would also aid the Department of Human Services. This Senate File will next be considered by the committee.
