Members of the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk and Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union wrestling teams were in action Saturday in the class 2A district tournament at Fairfield High School vying for a trip to state tournament in Des Moines.
Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union had the highest team score of the two schools on the day, taking seventh place with 31 points. Solon won the title with 151 points. The Wildcats got one champion on the day with Tucker Morrison taking the title at 170lbs. Morrison started the day by pinning Gaige Berryman of Eddyville-Blakesburg in 3:18. He captured the championship by a 9-0 major decision over Mike Hoyle of Solon. Jarod Kadel of Columbus qualified for state with a runner up finish at 106lbs. In his opening match Kadel bested Walker Ikerd of Washington by 6-2 decision. Kadel lost the championship match to Grayson Kesterson of Williamsburg by 10-0 major decision but did not need a wrestleback to qualify.
Mid-Prairie finished the day with a team score of 28 points, ninth in the 10 team field. The Golden Hawks had one state meet qualifier. At 182lbs Visouth Peterschmidt brought home the championship for the Hawks. Peterschmidt opened with a 15-1 major decision win over Collin Murphy of Washington. Peterschmidt took the title posting a fall in the championship match over Austin Angle of Eddyville-Blakesburg in 5:26.
Mid-Prairie’s Duncan McCain also participated Saturday in Fairfield. It was a tough day for McCain, entering the day undefeated on the season, he fell in the opening match at 132lbs by 6-2 decision to Alex Hanna of Eddyville Blakesburg. McCain bounced back to win the consolation title match by 17-4 major decision but the bracket did not play out in his favor and he was denied a wrestleback ending his season at the district tournament.
Kadel, Morrison, Peterschmidt and all other qualifiers from southeast Iowa will be in action at the state individual tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, beginning on Thursday.
