The Highland School Board held a special meeting Tuesday night to resolve procedural irregularities that occurred at the February 13th meeting. At that meeting, the board held a vote on whether or not they would close Ainsworth Elementary, and establish Riverside Elementary as the sole elementary building in the district. The motion to go through with the closure failed 3-4 after the initial vote. After further discussion and input from the audience, the motion was made a second time, and passed 6-1.
However, the procedure for making the motion the second time was done improperly, so the board convened to correct the procedural errors. By the end of the special meeting, the board once again voted 6-1 to close Ainsworth Elementary at the end of this school year. It’s still unknown what the board will decide to do with the building, though the majority of the teachers and staff at the school will retain their jobs in the district.
