Free summer reading programming isn’t just for kids, as several area libraries prove with adult reading programs.

This is the first year of the adult summer reading program for the Wellman-Scofield Library. Library Director Carol Wilkins describes the activity log that is given to adults, “Some of the things on the log are doing community service, going to a city council meeting, going to a library board meeting, checking out a cookbook and make a new meal.” The program’s theme is “Build a Better World,” so these activities are encouraged for adults to get involved in their community.

Wilkins talks about some speakers planned for the summer, “I have two programs scheduled, the first one is June 10th, and I have Kathy Wilson from Marion, she’s a historian. She’s going to come do a program, it’s called ‘Straight-Laced Girls, Uptight Ladies, and Loose Women.’ It should be hilarious, I think, lot’s of fun. And then on the 17th, I have New York Times best-selling author Heather Gudenkauf.” Gudenkauf is a mystery suspense author and South Dakota native who studied at the University of Iowa.

Wilkins says she is planning on having more scheduled programs throughout the summer. Registration for the adult summer reading program can be done on the Wellman-Scofield Library website.
