The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk softball team didn’t have enough to complete the final inning comeback Thursday night against Monticello, dropping a slugfest to the Panthers by a 12-10 score.
The game was a see saw early with the Panthers scoring once in the first, Mid-Prairie pushed across a pair in their first at bat on a wild pitch to take a 2-1 lead. Monticello answered back with a pair of tallies in the second inning to go up 3-2 and Mid-Prairie tied the game with a single run in the second. The third inning saw the Panthers put four runs on the board and grab control of the game at 7-3. The Golden Hawks chipped away with a pair of runs in the fourth inning on RBI from Kylee Kos and Caitlyn Riggan and another in the fifth when Tayler Murphy delivered an RBI knock to get within 7-6. Again the Panthers responded with a big inning scoring four in the sixth to go up 11-6 and another in the seventh to take a 12-6 lead late. Mid-Prairie got four runs in their last at bat, including a three run homer from Anna Vilovchik. The Hawks got the tying run up to the plate but could not complete the rally. Vilovchik had two hits, three RBI and a run scored to lead the Golden Hawks. In the circle Cassidy Rourke took the loss going all seven innings, giving up 12 runs on 11 hits and striking out three. With the loss Mid-Prairie is now 1-4 on the year and will next be in action Saturday in the Iowa City West Classic on the campus of the University of Iowa.
