The free summer lunch programs continue this summer for Wellman Elementary students.
Free summer lunches are being provided by the Wellman Mennonite Church on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning June 12th, and the Goodwin Senior Center offers lunches on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays beginning this week. This is the second summer the Goodwin Senior Center has taken part in this service, as Goodwin Center Commission President Leroy Powell explains, “We get generally, anywhere from 10 to 20 students, and then they also have adults that come in with them to supervise and make sure everything goes smoothly. There’s a fund that’s set up that pays for their lunches. On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays they go to the Mennonite Church and get sack lunches there, but Tuesdays and Thursdays they come down to the senior center and basically have the same meal that we have. On some days if it looks like the main entree might not be exactly what the kids would like, the cooks make sure that there will be something appropriate for the kids.”
The kids won’t need to worry about being served liver and onions then. Powell said their first year of serving kids went very well, and that it proved financially beneficial for the senior center as well. Though the summer meal program is free for the kids, Powell points out that anyone is welcome to have a meal at the Goodwin Center five days a week, it only costs $5 a meal.
