The Highland baseball and softball teams squeaked by Wapello on Thursday night with matching 4-3 scores.
In softball, the Huskies (19-5) took advantage of early scoring and a solid Megan Hoenig in the circle to capture their fourth straight win. Highland got on the board in the first inning and two more in the third that allowed them a 3-0 lead. The lead was short lived however, as Wapello (19-9) answered with three runs of their own. Highland was able to regain the lead for the final time in the sixth inning to manage the 4-3 win. Abbie Miller went 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Hoenig finished her night going seven innings in the circle with two earned runs on five hits and a strikeout.
Free baseball was featured in the boys’ game, as Highland (17-4) was able to edge by the Indians in extra innings. The Huskies led 3-1 heading into the fifth when the Indians tied it to force it into extras. In the top of the eight the Huskies managed a run to get the win on the road. Josh Michel led the way going 2-for-4 with two RBI. Garret Colbert went 2-for-2 with a RBI. On the bump, Chase Rath went six strong innings of one earned run on six hits.
The girls get back on the diamond today at Alburnett for a tournament as the boys play Monday battling Keota.
