The Riverside Fire Department is replacing the fire station lighting with LED in order to be more energy- and cost-efficient.

Assistant Fire Chief Curtis Sexton told the city council at a recent meeting that the halogen bulbs they currently have need replaced about every year, but the bulbs they’re purchasing from Van Meter Inc. should last 20 times longer.

Fire Chief Chad Smothers explains, “We’ve been in our station for 10 years and we’re just trying to keep up with the building so it will last us up 50-100 years. So we’re just wanting to replace some outdated lighting, transition to LED lighting for the exterior lighting. With that right now Alliant has rebates with it so it was just a good time to do it, some cost savings there, and obviously the energy cost savings going into the future.”

The total cost of the new lighting is $5,633.57, with $1,200 in rebates from Alliant Energy.
