The WACO basketball teams each squared off against Wapello on Tuesday night, with the girls losing 44-23 and the boys winning 43-32.
Wapello got out to a quick start in the girls’ game, with the Indians leading the Warriors 14-5 at the end of the first quarter. WACO would actually win the second quarter, bringing the score to 25-14 at halftime. It was all Wapello in the second half however, outscoring the Warriors 21-9 to take the win. Nadiya Brown led the way for WACO offensively with 13 points, making 66 percent of her shots.
Then came the boys game. The Warriors were pit up against a state tournament team from a season, so they had a tough test ahead of them come tip off. The first quarter ended 12-6 in Wapello’s favor. But WACO owned the second quarter, outscoring the Indians by 13. Wapello never really recovered, as the Warriors won the second half as well, if only by four points, to take the victory. Drew Kissell was the Warriors’ top scorer with 17 points, followed by Elijah McGohan with 10.
WACO basketball will be at it again on Friday night when both teams welcome West Burlington to town. The girls’ game is set to start at 6:00, with the boys’ game to follow.
