The Iowa Mennonite boys and girls basketball teams swept a Southeast Iowa Superconference doubleheader Tuesday in Kalona against Columbus.
The IMS girls took the win in a defensive grind 37-16. They opened the game on a 10-0 run while Columbus started the game with a 12 and a half minute draught from the floor. Leading 18-6 at half, IMS put together an 8-0 run to start the second half and put the game out reach. IMS was led by Suzanna Yoder’s 13 points. Yani Gutierrez had a double double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. With the win IMS improves to 5-5 on the year, Columbus falls to 0-8.
The Iowa Mennonite boys finished the sweep with a 70-33 win over the Wildcats. IMS held a 15-7 lead at the end of the first quarter and a 36-19 lead at the half. IMS enacted the running clock early in the fourth quarter and coasted to the win. They were led by Eli Ours with 15 points, Blake Bontrager added 12 off the bench. Eric Valdez led the Wildcats with 16. IMS improves to 5-2 with the win, Columbus falls to 1-6.
