The Washington basketball teams both got much-needed victories last night, going down to Fort Madison and beating the Bloodhounds for each of their first conference wins of the year.
The girls’ game came first, with the Demons sticking it to the Bloodhounds early on and taking a 21-point lead into halftime. They’d continue to control the game from there, with the lead going to as much as 30 points before ultimately winning by a 46-23 score. It was yet another balanced scoring effort from the Demons last night, with Kinsey Duwa leading the way with nine points off the bench followed by Isabel Bailey and Kira Ropp with eight apiece.
The boys would follow, and this one was much closer. The Demons got out to a quick 2-0 lead, but the Bloodhounds would answer right back with a three to take a lead of their own. But the Demons would score again to retake the lead, and Fort Madison would never get it back. It was a close and toughly-fought battle for the vast majority of it, but the Bloodhounds could never get over that threshold, and the Demons would go on a late fourth-quarter run to take the game by 13 points, 73-60. Treshaun Willis had a breakout game, going off for a career-high 22 points.
With the wins, the girls improve to 4-4 and the boys to 2-4 on the young season. Each of the teams will play again on Thursday night, with the girls traveling to Louisa-Muscatine and the boys hosting Albia. The boys’ game will be on KCII starting with the Washington HyVee pregame show at 7:15 with a 7:45 tip-off.
