The WACO and Winfield-Mt. Union girls’ basketball teams squared off in Wayland on Friday night as part of the Southeast Iowa Superconference’s north-south shootout, with the Warriors grabbing the win 50-32.

Winfield-Mt. Union struggled to get the ball in the hoop in the first half, scoring 10 points as a team through the first two quarters.  Head coach Mitch Wachs wasn’t too happy with the performance.

“I was really disappointed with out inability to execute basic fundamentals in the first half [Friday night].  To not sugarcoat it, we played very poorly in the first half,” Wachs said.  “It was a struggle; I think we had 20 turnovers in the first half.  And we only put up 10 points in the first half, mostly because when you turn it over that many times, you don’t get many shots or attacks on the basket.”

WACO, meanwhile, led 8-4 going into the second quarter before putting 16 points on the board to take a 14-point lead into halftime. They’d hold onto and build on that lead for the rest of the game.

The loss moves W-MU to 4-13, and WACO improves to 6-11 with the win.
