An enforcement action was filed by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources against a Washington County pork producer following a manure discharge in September. The action was in regards to compliance with animal feeding regulations for Brenneman Pork, Inc. and Brenneman Family Farms, LLLP. According to the DNR, on September 27, 2018, Rob Brenneman notified the DNR that manure was discharging from a rural Wellman facility with a 4,800 head swine nursery and had entered a tile line and reached a tributary of Lime Creek. He told the DNR that mitigation efforts were underway, including damming the stream at three locations and pumping out the contaminated water. An environmental specialist investigated the site of the discharge and was informed that an irrigation system malfunctioned, which caused the land-applied manure to pool and discharge into the stream. The specialist determined that the mitigation efforts taken by Brenneman were effective and that the water downstream from the dam were similar to the waters upstream from the discharge site. There were no dead fish as a result of the discharge. Brenneman was ordered to pay an administrative penalty of $1,000. The compliance of the order was signed and filed January 28th by the DNR.
