The Washington wrestling team’s dual season came to an end last night, taking the loss to top-ranked West Delaware in the regional duals tournament.
The Demons took a goose egg on their side of the scoreboard, losing 84-0. Don’t let the score deceive you though; the Demons elected to rest all but two of their district-qualifying wrestlers and took forfeits once the dual got out of reach in an effort to get home sooner and beat the weather. Head coach Brent Van Weelden said after the dual that it would have been much more competitive if his guys were at full strength, but caution was the way to go.
“To beat a good West Delaware team, everything was going to have to go right,” Van Weelden said. “We lost some matches early. At that point it was ‘alright, the kids that are banged up, let’s just rest them.’ And once it got to be 48 or 54 [to nothing], we have nothing to gain at this point. I think we could have won some matches at the end, but there was more rick than there was reward at that point. There was no reason to wrestle them in my opinion.”
The Demons end their dual season with a 17-7 record. Now it’s on to districts, where nine Demon wrestlers will compete for a spot in the state tournament in their respective weight classes. Saturday’s district round will be held at Washington High School with action starting at noon.
