Mid-Prairie will be making changes to their elementary school structure to accommodate a large second-grade class. At the recent school board meeting, elementary principals Robin Foster and Bill Poock presented 11 options to add a sixth second-grade section. The board approved a plan that includes moving four kindergarten sections to West Elementary in Wellman. Currently all preschool and kindergarten classes are housed in East Elementary in Kalona. Foster and Poock suggested this option because it opens up room at East Elementary to add another second-grade section.

The sensory room at West Elementary will be renovated to hold two traditional classrooms. Foster says without the additional section they’d be looking at second-grade classes of up to 27 students. The changes will go into effect beginning in the fall.
