ims-3

The Iowa Mennonite School boys basketball team was eliminated from the playoffs in the district semifinals Tuesday night at Calamus-Wheatland by the No. 13 ranked Warriors 64-56.

Things were tight through the first half as both teams battled foul trouble. Cal-Wheat got a three at the first quarter buzzer from Josh Hein to take a 14-13 lead after one while IMS returned the favor as Trevor Leyden got a friendly roll on a triple at the halftime buzzer to give IMS a 30-28 lead at the half. In the third quarter, the script stayed the same as the two teams seesawed back and forth. IMS would again score at the buzzer, this time a Kobe Borntrager lay-up in the final breaths of the frame gave IMS a 45-43 advantage going to the fourth. In the final period, Cal-Wheat turned up their defense and Iowa Mennonite couldn’t find an answer. Still down just 56-52 with three minutes remaining, the Warriors forced key turnovers and hit free throws down the stretch to seal the victory. IMS was led by Caleb Gingerich and Eli Ours who each finished with 14 points and Kobe Borntrager chipped in 11. With the loss, IMS wraps up their season at 13-7.
