The WACO Warrior boys basketball team caught the No. 5 New London Tigers in an upset trap Thursday night in Burlington, winning the class 1A district title by a 41-37 score.
New London led 10-6 after one quarter and the Tigers built a 24-12 lead midway through the second. Down 10 at half, WACO continued to hang around and got the shot in the arm they needed with a Nik Coble three at the third quarter buzzer to pull them within nine. Down the stretch the Warrior defense was terrific, giving the high powered Tigers just four points in the fourth quarter while they closed the game with 17 of their own to erase the deficit. Colton Horak was big down the stretch as the senior guard got the three point play to give WACO their first lead and hit a pair of free throws in the final 20 seconds to ice the game. Coble led WACO with 19 points, Drew Kissell finished with 12. With the win WACO is now 17-4 on the year and will play Alburnett Saturday at Iowa City Liberty for a shot at their first state tournament berth since 2006.
