The City of Washington is moving to the PAWS and More fee formula and will be paying for the number of animals served. For the first time in six years the shelter raised it’s boarding fee from $15 to $18 per day and pick up fees increased by $20 to $60. Per state law, the shelter must hold animals for a minimum of seven days. The Washington City Council approved paying a $16.50 rate next year and then going to the PAWS formula the next fiscal year. City Administrator Brent Hinson said it’s fair for both the shelter and the city, “This would transition us to basically the actual number of animals times that $18 times seven days, which the city has not done in the past. But I do think is, you know, that’s how PAWS has handled their other fees for service with other entities, we believe that that’s what’s the most fair for all involved. So, this just transitions us into that for one year, and then thereafter that money, that number can fluctuate year to year, you know, if they intake, you know, 190 cats versus 210 there’s going to be a little bit of difference in overall what we pay, but we’re paying per animal times their standard rates.” The City of Washington’s average number of cats in a year is 202. This is the same formula that PAWS and More uses with the other entities they serve.
