Due to the flood warning in Kalona, the city is providing sandbags for residents. City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh says they put together around two-dozen bags and have spare materials to make more.
Schlabaugh added that he’s not too concerned about flooding as of yet, but it’s something to keep an eye on, “There’s always a concern when the river gets above 20 feet and specifically that 24 feet mark, which right now projections have it falling well below 24 feet. When it gets that high and we have any sort of precipitation or rain event, there’s no place for it to go. If the Iowa and English [rivers] can’t take it then it has to stay.”
Kalona is under a flood warning until Sunday night. Flood stage is set at 14 feet, the forecast has the English River levels to rise to 19 feet. Sandbags are available at 711 A Avenue in Kalona.
