The Columbus-Winfield-Mt. Union boys and girls soccer teams open 2019 Monday when they take on the Mount Pleasant Panthers.
The Wildcat boys are coming off of a 2018 season that saw them finish with an 8-8 overall record. Columbus returns their top scorer from last season with Felix Solis who posted 15 goals in 2018 as a sophomore. He also led the team with seven assists. Defensively the Wildcats will turn to Keagan Atkinson who played 1,000 minutes in goal as a freshman with a 70% save percentage.
The Mount Pleasant boys were 12-7 a season ago. The Panthers return their second leading scorer from last year in Jayden Vongsavath with 10 goals. He led the team with 11 assists. These two teams met a season ago with the Panthers taking a 4-0 win.
The Columbus girls also start their season tonight against Mount Pleasant. Last year the Wildcats were 4-9. Columbus returns their leading scorer in Vanessa Mena who put up eight goals as a junior. Lizabeth Paz also returns after seven assists in her freshman season that led the team.
The Mount Pleasant girls were 12-6 last season. The Panthers were led by Mary West with 18 goals a season ago, she returns in 2019 for her senior season. The Panthers also return their goal keeper in Ayden Ross who spent more than 1,200 minutes in goal with a 78% save percentage. Mount Pleasant took the match last year 1-0.
