The No. 5 ranked Iowa Mennonite School boys soccer team suffered their first loss of the year Monday, falling to No. 13 Burlington Notre Dame in Kalona 2-1 in double overtime.
IMS fell behind early as the Nikes got the lone tally of the first half to take a 1-0 lead into the break. Iowa Mennonite got the equalizer from Brian Maren midway through the second half. Things stayed tied through the end of regulation, sending things to an overtime, golden goal scenario. After the first 10 minute extra period, the teams entered the second extra frame. Five minutes into period two, Notre Dame got the golden goal from freshman Gabe Zurita. After the match, IMS head coach Marcus Miller talked about the night. “For our goal I think Louis put a ball toward the goal and it deflected off someone and Brian was there to pick up the rebound. It’s the first time he has taken a shot all year on one touch. We were dominating play through the last 15 minutes and overtime, but they have two speedy guys up front. If you give them a break they are skilled enough to make you pay and that’s what happened.”
With the loss, IMS falls to 2-1 on the season as they travel to Holy Trinity Catholic Tuesday night.
