The Highland School Board has given their seal of approval for the 2019-2020 district calendar. School will start on Friday, August 23rd and the last day is set for Wednesday, May 27th. The board approved the calendar after a public hearing earlier this month. During the public hearing, there was concern from a parent regarding parent-teacher conferences being held on Wednesday evenings, as that may conflict with religious education night. The administration had considered this when constructing the calendar, and said that with conferences being held on Tuesdays or Thursdays, a good amount of faculty was unable to be present due to athletic events and activities. Elementary principal Jane O’leary added that it wasn’t uncommon for parents to schedule meeting outside of normal conference hours if there are conflicts. The calendar also includes an increase of built-in snow make up days. January 2nd, 3rd, and 20th, along with April 9th will be the first days that Highland will use to make up time if there are snow days. There are 1,109 hours built into the school year, which exceeds the 1,080 minimum set by the state.
