While major flooding continues along the banks of the Mississippi River, levels in local areas along the Iowa, Skunk, and Cedar Rivers remain below flood stage. The English River at Kalona is approximately 9 feet below flood stage and the Skunk River near Sigourney is about 10 feet below flood stage. The Iowa River near Lone Tree and at Columbus Junction is below flood stage by at least 5 feet at each location. At Wapello the water is nearly three feet below flood stage. And at Oakville the Iowa River is about 1.5 feet below flood stage.
According to the National Weather Service, a spring storm system is moving through the region with accumulating snow in northeast Iowa Saturday afternoon and evening. Also, thunderstorms are possible Sunday and Tuesday, with heavy rain in the forecast. These storm systems will “eventually aggravate ongoing river flooding situations” with the additional precipitation. Listen to KCII for weather updates.
