As we turn the calendar to May, there’s less than two weeks left to hunt turkeys this spring. The fourth and final season began April 24th and will run through May 12th. Shooting hours start a half-hour before sunrise and lasts until sunset. The need to be stealthy can provide additional safety challenges. Iowa DNR Recreation Safety Officer Jeff Barnes gives some advice to keep safety as priority number one, “Turkey hunters are skilled in the art of concealment. Don’t shoot at movement, don’t shoot at sound; no turkey’s worth it.” Barnes also advises to not pull the trigger until you see the bird’s distinct beard. The DNR also wants to remind hunters to report their harvest. All harvests collected, regardless of species, should be reported by midnight of the harvest date. You can report the harvest in person at any DNR vendor location, by calling the phone number on the tag, or online at IowaDNR.gov.
