Disc golfers will have nine more permanent holes to enjoy over the summer, as the Washington City Council approved adding them to Sunset Park. At their Tuesday meeting, the council had one resident speak in opposition of the disc golf expansion. Luke Leyden said that living nearby, he’s worried about the discs damaging his property. He requested that disc golfers be reminded of the city’s leash law after seeing many dogs off leash while their owners disc golf, “What I’m proposing is that there be a sign posted at hole number one saying dogs must be on a leash. I also propose by the league that plays. I don’t think that’s too much to ask. I’ve called the police, as we’ve discussed in the past, and that’s only resulted in vandalism to my property. So I ask that it be addressed that way.” The council was in favor of adding the signage, along with reminding people to respect private property.
The council discussed the use of public parks and not restricting the space for certain activities, as council member Elaine Moore said, “If we’re going to start prohibiting, or restricting a certain kind of activity in the park in a certain area, so what happens when we’ve got a dad and a child wanting to throw a softball or baseball? Well, you know, not everybody is going to catch the ball and it’s going to go. Regular frisbee, we’ve got coming down on skateboards. Again this is a park, at some point we have to treat it as a park. So I think we’re opening up a nest if we prohibit one type of activity in the park. Where does that stop?”
The City added the nine holes last fall on a temporary basis to see how they’d be received. Tuesday the council unanimously approved making these holes permanent and using concrete to finish them. Sunset Park will now have a full 18 holes for disc golf.
