Demons will be running wild at the Blue Oval in Des Moines next week, as numerous Washington track athletes automatically qualified for the state meet after placing in the top two at a class 3A district in Mount Pleasant Friday.
A strong day up and down the lineup allowed for the Demon boys to place second out of eight teams with 107 points while Mount Pleasant won the district team crown with 153. Mitchell Driscoll and Ethan Hunt were the headliners, each qualifying in three events. Hunt took home top honors in the 400m hurdles (55.14) while Driscoll won a title in the 400m (51.68). The duo also was a part of the winning sprint medley (1:35.79) and 4x400m relay (3:30.27). Cade Hennigan, Jacob Miller, Luke Turner, and Justin Simmering rounded out the individuals in the qualifying relays. Hunt started his anchor leg of the 4x400m in third before making up 15 meters of ground to seize the top spot. Other Demons qualifying for state included Lincoln Kleese in the long jump (20’10.75); the shuttle hurdle relay (1:01.44) of Kleese, Hennigan, Spencer Sotelo, and Ben Schiefer; and Justin Simmering in the 800m (2:02.51).
The Demon girls placed seventh on the night with 57 points while Davenport Assumption was first with 161. Jenah Greiner qualified in the long jump placing second (16’9.5’’). Other notable performances included Ashley Telleen third in the 400m hurdles (1:10.73); 4x100m relay in third (51.18); 4x200m in third (1:49.37); and 4x800m in third (12:06.41).
