Blue Top Ridge at the Riverside Casino and Golf Resort served as the big stage Wednesday for the class 1A district golf tournament as teams and individuals vied for a berth to the state tournament in Newton. The Sigourney boys shot a sizzling 343, led by meet medalist Dustin Haines with his round of 81. Other scores for the Savages included Josh Mohr and Ian Terfehn at 86, Nick Goad 90, Cole Weber and Brett Striegel each at 92. After the meet, Sigourney head coach Zach Tremmel and the Savages talked about the day. “After nine I had a feeling it was going to be a three horse race between us, Iowa Valley and Winfield, and I think we were sitting third. Then Dustin goes out and shoots even par on the back and that was really the difference. For Ian Terfehn to shoot an 86 was huge. We didn’t use Brett Striegel’s score but he shot a 92. Those two really stepped up and the others were consistent. This is big for the community, anytime you make it to state.”
“It felt great! We have been working for this for the last three years. It makes me excited and happy. We have worked hard to get where we are. This is a dream come true. It’s the most fun I have had. This is a dream for us. If you go out to the golf course last summer, you would see us out there working hard. We thought about this so much and to see it come to fruition is great.”
Winfield-Mt. Union just missed out on a trip to state, finishing in third place with a team score of 361. Iowa Valley nipped the Wolves for the final spot with a 351. Though the team didn’t advance a pair of players did from WMU with Jarod Kadel taking third with an 84 and Nolan Ross fifth with an 85. Other scores for the Wolves included Graham Hagge 95, Brady Loyd 97 and Jacob Kongable and Noah Freeman 98.
Iowa Mennonite School had Trevor Leyden competing as an individual. He fired a 98, finishing in the middle of the field.
