The greenhouse at Mid-Prairie High School and outdoor classroom at West Elementary are set to see some upgrades. The greenhouse was constructed in the late 90’s and hasn’t seen much change since. An outdoor classroom and garden was built last year at West Elementary. Mid-Prairie received a $34,865 grant from the Washington County Riverboat Foundation to update both facilities. This project will add electricity, water, and heating and cooling to the outdoor classroom so it can be used year-round. Learning Design Coach Glenda Seward says the learning in these facilities goes beyond the lesson plan, “The greenhouse and the garden has just been a really positive experience with the younger students learning from the older students, the mentoring that goes on, the role modeling that goes on. The outdoor classroom really ties it together for the elementary [students] where they’ll have that outdoor space, which is just adjacent to the garden, to be able to go out and do some learning year-round.” Seward says that contractors have been contacted regarding the projects. She hopes to have everything ready by the time school begins in the fall.
