Keokuk County will receive a share of $1.3 million from the state recreational trails program to continue the Belva Deer Trail project. This project broke ground in 2006 as an effort to make Lake Belva Deer Park more accessible. Efforts are now in the third phase of the project to pave 2.65 miles of the trail with concrete to connect Sigourney to Lake Belva Deer Park. Keokuk County and the Keokuk County Highway Department received $328,000 of funding from the program that funds trail and transportation projects across Iowa. This phase of the project will cost a total of $1,188,000.
