Ticks that carry Lyme disease can be found in Iowa. Lyme disease can be transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected black-legged or deer tick. The tell tale sign of Lyme disease is a bull’s eye-shaped rash. Other symptoms may include fever, headache, and fatigue. Washington County Public Health Nurse Lynn Fisher says the best thing to do if you get bit by a tick is to remove it safely, “Just try to pull the whole tick off with a tweezers. And washing right away, washing that site right away, and actually taking a shower as soon as you come indoors. There’s been some evidence that washing, taking a shower within two hours might reduce the chance of getting Lyme disease.” To prevent tick bites, wear insect repellent containing DEET, as well as tall socks, boots, pants, and long sleeves when in wooded or bushy areas. Remember to check yourself for ticks when you head indoors, and check your dog, too.
