Washington County’s unemployment rate rose a fraction of a percentage from May to June. According to Iowa Workforce Development, Washington County’s unemployment rate went from 1.9% with 200 people unemployed up to 2.2% with 300 people unemployed. Other area counties that saw slight increases in unemployment during the same timeframe include Henry, Iowa, Jefferson, Johnson, Keokuk and Louisa Counties. Washington County is part of the Iowa City Metropolitan Statistical Area, which saw a decrease of 700 jobs last month. Service-providing industries cut 900 jobs while goods producing industries added more than 200 jobs last month. The total non-farm employment level last month was 99,500. Compared to a year ago, the metro area has 1,200 fewer jobs with losses in every industry except for leisure and hospitality, and professional and business services, each of those have added 200 jobs.
