West Nile virus has infected one person in Iowa this summer. According to the Iowa Department of Public Health, a man from Audubon County between the ages of 61 and 80 contracted West Nile virus this summer. He has since recovered. The virus is transmitted when an infected mosquito bites a human. Steps to reduce the risk of exposure to West Nile virus include using an insect repellent with DEET, Picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or IR3535. Avoid outdoor activities between dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active. And wear long-sleeve shirts, pants, shoes, and socks when outdoors when possible. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water, so be sure to empty water from buckets, pool covers, pet dishes, and change the water in bird baths every three to four days. Last year, 104 Iowans were diagnosed with West Nile virus and nine Iowans died.
