A dark charcoal portrait of a girl looking over her shoulder with long dark hair that has been on display in the Washington Public Library that’s been described as “eerie” will be the subject of an art lecture. The self-portrait was created in 1985 by Sandra Reed and is titled “Wintertime.” Washington Public Library Director Bryna Walker says the locally-raised artist is returning to the area and will be giving a lecture, “She went to Mid-Prairie. She’s from this area. But she graduated and went on to art school. She’s a professor of art at Marshall University in West Virginia. This portrait has become kind of renowned through the years as being kind of an eerie one.”
Reed’s public lecture will be this Sunday, August 4th, at 2 p.m. about the self portrait and her journey in the arts. According to the description that is alongside the portrait, “During its time at the old library, many staff found this portrait startling – the eyes are a powerful part of this drawing and have that effect.”
