Today we start our top 10 best sports stories for our KCII area schools from this past academic year and number 10 takes us to the basketball court in Wayland.
Fresh off of a 10-12 campaign a year ago, the WACO boys had a huge turnaround season this past winter under head coach Paul Kissell going 17-5 and falling just a few points short of a class 1A state appearance in Des Moines. The Warriors grinded out wins in the postseason beating Lone Tree 48-42, Pekin 53-50, and New London 41-37 that set up a sub-state final with Alburnett. Trailing by nine at half, WACO stormed back to force overtime, but ultimately fell 60-54. The Pirates would go on to become state runner-up. On the season Nik Coble led WACO with 17.9 points and 10.4 rebounds a night. The Warriors’ 17 wins were the most the program has experienced since 2008. Check back in tomorrow for number 9 on our countdown.
