The anticipated start to the high school football season is finally here and Washington kicks off their 2019 journey making a trip to Marion with revenge on their minds.
Last year the Indians spoiled James Harris’ head coaching debut for the Demons with a decisive 40-14 win. The passing game torched the Washington defense with Trevor Paulsen throwing for 265 yards and three touchdowns. Expect a new look offense however, as Paulsen and many of his weapons have graduated after the Indians’ 4-5 season. Their starting quarterback has no varsity experience, Isaac Cechota is their leading rusher back with just 293 yards, and they lost their top two tacklers. In 2018 the Indians were a pass first offense but Harris tells KCII Sports this year could be a different story. “Last year they gave us a big slice of humble pie. They were a spread-10 personnel team but in the past they have been an I-formation team so we have to be ready for anything. We have to be adaptable defensively and tighten things up on the offense.”
Washington went 6-3 a season ago and return third year quarterback Luke Turner. The senior signal caller compiled over 1,900 yards of offense last fall and 26 touchdowns. Ethan Hunt returns on the outside with 470 receiving yards and Trashaun Willis will man the defense after 54 tackles in his sophomore campaign.
The season kicks off at 7:15 p.m. tonight at Marion High School. Listen to the broadcast on FM 106.1 KCII starting at 6:45 p.m. The Football Friday Preview Show will air at 5:45 p.m.
