For the first time in two years the Winfield-Mt Union cross country team was crowned champions in a meet on Tuesday when they placed first out of six teams in Donnellson.
Brody Barton led the pack for the Wolves placing third with a time of 18:22 and Dane Sweezer was not far behind in seventh (19:36). Other top finishes include Asa Gipple ninth (19:46), Lane Scorpil 11th (20:33), Talon Newton 18th (21:53), and Destiny Calvin in 19th (23:01). Head Coach Amanda Hemsworth tells KCII Sports their depth helped them on Tuesday. “We are very blessed with the ability we have with the boys. They all are similar in where they are at in their ability and that makes a big difference in how you compete. You don’t necessarily have to have the individual champion to win a team title and it showed with us being able to hold a lot of top 20 finishes and win it all.”
The Wolves get back on the course today in Fort Madison along with area schools Washington and Columbus Community.
