A group of six Mid-Prairie upperclassmen is looking to make a big difference in a small town. With the 2020 Presidential election looming, their goal is to convince candidates to speak in Wellman at their high school.

This group of students consists of Brianna Ghumm, Sierra Yoder, Aubrey Fay, Marina Richardson, Riley Yoder, and Eryk Hovde and is guided by Social Studies teacher Schuyler Snakenberg. The students have reached out to politicians on all ends of the spectrum, and have had direct correspondence with just one campaign so far, that of Senator Elizabeth Warren. Ghumm tells KCII news that the group is trying to give their town a voice, “We are really hoping that we get recognized. We hope that if they get elected President they remember that the laws they make don’t just affect big towns. They also affect small communities like us.”

The group plans to continue contacting campaigns as candidates begin to make trips to Iowa closer to election season. No candidates have yet confirmed they’ll speak at the school.
