A year and a half ago, WACO became the first high school in Iowa to create an on-campus Esports arena. Now in its second full year of operation, WACO’S Esports program has approximately 20 middle and high school players consistently attending. Numbers for the program vary depending on what sports are currently in season. Students who are interested in getting involved can by speaking to Mr. Ayrit.
Program Director Drew Ayrit says that his program is still developing, “Our Esports program is constantly evolving as we figure out what fits our school the best and as we match up our program with others from around the area and state.”
Ayrit explains that having a community with which to share their passion is crucial for students, “Teenage years are difficult to navigate socially and emotionally. And that becomes significantly easier if you have a close community where you can share experiences with each other, be comfortable with each other, and understand that you are not alone.”
Ayrit hopes to coordinate with other schools statewide to continue Esport’s newfound growth.
