White-tailed deer are beginning rut, or their breeding season, this month and drivers in Iowa are reminded to be on the lookout for deer in the roadway. Rut lasts from October to January.  The Iowa Department of Transportation is sharing safety tips for drivers. Remember, don’t veer for deer. If you see a deer on or near the road, brake firmly, don’t swerve out of your lane. If you hit a deer, move your vehicle to a safe place and call 911. By reporting the crash, you help the Iowa DOT and Department of Natural Resources monitor where more fencing or signs might be helpful. Finally, if you do hit a deer, do not approach it. The police will call the proper authorities to remove the deer. Deer often run together, so if you see one, look for others. According to conservation officials, the highest chance of hitting a deer is from sunset to midnight and shortly before and after sunrise.
