One person died in a two-vehicle wreck in Lee County with drivers from Burlington and Salem. According to the Iowa State Patrol, at 2:39 p.m. Sunday a Jeep Cherokee driven by 22-year-old Holly Mathews of Salem was stopped on Highway 2 to turn left into a private driveway when another vehicle eastbound applied the brakes and swerved to avoid it. The second vehicle was a Ford Explorer driven by 62-year-old Larry Reynolds of Burlington.
The Explorer swerved but still hit the rear end on the passenger side of the Jeep. The Explorer entered the south ditch and rolled several times. Reynolds was wearing a seatbelt and was taken by ambulance to Unity Medical Center but he died.
Three people were injured, including 69-year-old Ronnie Underwood of Burlington who was taken by helicopter to the University of Iowa hospitals. Mathews was taken by ambulance to the Fort Madison hospital, as was Suzanne Kennedy of Highland, Texas.
