leaves

While it’s felt more like autumn over the past several days, the changing of the leaves remains a bit behind schedule for peak season. According to this week’s Iowa Department of Natural Resources Fall Colors Report, most of the overall landscape remains mostly green, but trees are starting to accelerate their color change as cooler air has settled in. For southeast Iowa, walnut, cottonwood, black cherry, ash, and elms are turning yellow and dropping some leaves. Maples are still mostly green, but there are a few branches showing some yellow and red. Some sumac, poison ivy, and dogwoods are starting to show some reds and purples. Peak viewing of fall colors is expected by the Iowa DNR this weekend into early next week.
