Fresh off of the SEISC meet on Monday, there was no time to rest for a few area cross country teams, as they competed in the Mike Jay Invitational in Columbus Junction on Tuesday.
No sign of fatigue came from the Highland girls, as they won the meet with 33 points to edge Cardinal with 35. The Huskies went one-two in the event with Madison Thomann winning the title in 22:03 and teammate Fiona Mahler was runner-up in 23:32. Also cracking the top 10 was Alli Brand in sixth (24:08) and Taylor Sublette eighth (25:21). Columbus placed fourth with 76 points and Juvixsa Valdez paced them in 12th (26:09). Van Iang was next in 13th (26:52). Winfield-Mt. Union didn’t have enough for a team score but Avery Maeder cracked the top five in fifth (24:02).
The Columbus boys celebrated their home meet with their second title of the season and both the boys and girls won the Dick Peterson Combined Team Trophy. The Wildcats’ 40 points bested WMU’s 54. Highland came in sixth with 136 points. Columbus Community had three runners in the top 10 including Isaac Acosta in third (19:21), Alex Rivas sixth (19:54), and Freddy Vergara seventh (20:02). The Wolves’ Brody Barton was 14 seconds away from a title, finishing runner-up (18:56) and Dane Sweezer was eighth (20:08). Jacob Roling was 18th (21:34) to lead the Huskies.
