The Lone Tree defense came to play Friday night in Wayland, as they carried the Lions to victory over WACO 36-20.
In the early going the Warrior offense looked like they were picking up right where they left off, as they took the opening drive right down the field capped off by a Nik Coble to Robert Frazer 10-yard touchdown pass to take a 6-0 lead. The Lions settled in and Harmon Miller had a pair of two-yard rushing scores to take a 16-6 advantage at the break. WACO would not go away getting within two on a Jaden Williams 34-yard scoring reception, but the Lions had the answer once again with back-to-back touchdowns from Miller and Will Hotz. Both teams traded points in the fourth with the Lions coming out with a road win. Miller was seven of 15 through the air for 124 yards and reached pay dirt on the ground three times. Alex Viner carried the rock 14 times for 133 yards and a score.
WACO’s Coble was 18 of 39 through the air for 233 yards and three touchdowns. The Warriors’ 269 yards of total offense was their lowest output all year and Lone Tree head coach Aaron Bohr could not have been more pleased with his defense. “It starts with Coach Shield and his game plan coming in. We gave WACO some different looks and made it so their quarterback could not get comfortable. We brought a lot of pressure their way on some blitzes and our d-lineman got in the backfield too. It was a great defensive performance all around.”
Lone Tree improves to 4-4 and close out the year Friday hosting English Valleys. WACO honored 10 seniors before the game for senior night. They are now 3-5 and gear up for the rivalry matchup against Winfield-Mt. Union.
