midprairie-3

The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk volleyball team begins the class 3A regional tournament Wednesday night when they travel to take on the top-five ranked West Liberty Comets. The Golden Hawks come into the match with an overall record of 6-21. Last time out Mid-Prairie dropped all four matches at the River Valley Conference tournament last week. On the season, the Golden Hawks are led by Tori Boyse with 112 kills. Landry Pacha has the team lead with 210 assists, ninth in the River Valley Conference. Amber Swart leads the Golden Hawk defense with 132 digs.

West Liberty comes into the match with an overall record of 28-7. The Comets are ranked No. 2 in class 3A in the latest poll from the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. The Comets are on a six match winning streak, as they rolled through the River Valley Conference tournament to a team championship last week at Cascade. On the season West Liberty is led by Macy Daufeldt with 410 kills, most in the River Valley and eighth most in class 3A. Morgan Peterson leads the conference, and is fifth in class 3A with 830 assists. Monica Morales paces the Comet defense with 391 digs, most in the River Valley and ninth in class 3A. This week, Mid-Prairie head coach Sherry Evans talked about what makes West Liberty such a tough matchup. “They have a lot of athletes that play club volleyball. They work all year round and you can definitely tell on the court. They have a long tenured coach who has been there and had a lot of success.”

These two teams met three times during the regular season, with the Comets sweeping all of the matches. Action begins tonight at 7p.m. at West Liberty High School.
