As previously reported by KCII, the Columbus Junction city council was reviewing their base charge for sewer water usage and a possible increase. At their most recent meeting, council approved a $5 increase to move the minimum charge for the first 2,000 gallons of water used from $10 to $15. This is in order to help with the current budget, but also allow the city to pursue a solution for Iowa Department of Natural Resources compliance regarding ammonia levels in water discharge. The cost of the system that would bring the city compliant is approximately $500,000.
