With the official start of winter this week, residents of Washington are being reminded of the city’s snow and ice removal ordinance. Property owners are responsible for keeping their sidewalks free from snow and ice. The sidewalk needs to be clear of any snow or ice accumulation within 24 hours after the snow has stopped falling or ice has formed. Failure to remove it can result in the city cleaning it and assessing the cost against the property. When removing snow, it is unlawful to remove it from private property and put in the street, right of way, or an alley. Avoid blocking sidewalks or creating a hazardous condition on the street.
