The Mid-Prairie boys and girls basketball teams hosted the Tipton Tigers Friday in a River Valley Conference doubleheader in Wellman. The Golden Hawk girls took a defensive battle by a 35-28 score. The game seesawed back and forth much of the night with the Hawks trailing 11-8 after one quarter and up 18-16 at the half. Going to the fourth, Mid-Prairie held a slim 24-23 lead but clamped down with their defense to allow just five points over the last eight minutes of the contest to put the game out of reach. Phelan Hostetler led the way for the Hawks with 13 points in the win. The victory is the first of the year for the Hawks, moving their overall record to 1-2 this season.
The Mid-Prairie boys suffered their first setback of the year against the Tigers, falling by a 57-48 count. Tipton held the lead early, up 15-10 after one quarter and 24-17 at the break. Mid-Prairie made a move in the third quarter to get within four but could get no closer down the stretch as the Tigers put the game away at the line. Aidan Rath led the Hawks with 13 points, Ethan Trimpe added 12. Mid-Prairie is now 1-1 on the year. The Golden Hawks are next in action Tuesday when they host rival Iowa City Regina in Wellman.
