The Iowa City Regina boys and girls basketball teams scored a pair of River Valley Conference wins on Tuesday over Mid-Prairie in doubleheader action. In a defensive battle the Regal girls got by Mid-Prairie 32-29. The Golden Hawks had the best of it early, holding Regina scoreless for the first six minutes of the game and without a field goal for the first nine minutes, building a lead of 6-1 after one quarter. Regina got things on track in the second period and a Hope Simpson free throw line jumper at the halftime buzzer gave the Regals a 15-14 lead going to the break.
In the third, Regina built a lead of six, but Mid-Prairie answered, tying the game at 21 going to the fourth quarter and down the stretch things stayed tied. The difference was Regina hitting seven of seven free throws in the fourth quarter and forcing nine Mid-Prairie second half turnovers, compared to just four Golden Hawk giveaways in the first half. Mid-Prairie had a chance to tie the game in the final 15 seconds but a late three point attempt wouldn’t fall. Phelan Hostetler led the Golden Hawks with 10 points. With the loss, the Hawks are now 1-3.
The Mid-Prairie boys made a valiant comeback in the second half after trailing by 22, but still fell to the top 10 Regals 61-48. Regina built their lead on the strength of 22 first half points for Masen Miller, but Mid-Prairie rallied in the third quarter with a 9-0 run to cut the lead to six. The Hawks would get within six once more and eight in the fourth quarter but each time the Regals found an answer and held Mid-Prairie off down the stretch for the win. Miller ended with a game high 35 for Regina. Mid-Prairie was led by 15 from Carter Harmsen and 13 from Ethan Trimpe. With the loss, the Golden Hawks are 1-2 on the year. The Mid-Prairie boys and girls will next be in action Friday when they travel to North Cedar.
